Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) is committed to addressing SDG 1: No Poverty by promoting education and community development as pathways out of poverty. Through scholarships and financial aid, UPH provides access to quality education for students from low-income backgrounds, empowering them with the skills needed for economic independence. The university also engages in community outreach programs that focus on poverty alleviation, such as providing vocational training, entrepreneurship workshops, and support for small businesses. By fostering education and economic opportunities, UPH aims to reduce poverty levels and contribute to sustainable development within its local and national communities.

Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) is one of the private Christian universities located in Indonesia. UPH provides holistic transformational education, bible foundation and Reformed theological framework. UPH are contributing and participating in the advancement of science and culture in the development of individuals and society. One of UPH’s contributions to community development is providing educational assistance to communities with low-income family backgrounds. Educational assistance is provided from various disciplines in all faculties at UPH.
In the academic year of 2022/2023 academic year, UPH is targeted 760 students get educational assistance program. The program is provided by UPH through disseminating information with use UPH social media. The social media used are YouTube, Instagram, and UPH website. FIP-Brochure.pdf

On these social media, UPH provides information on the availability of educational assistance, requirements, and test schedules. In addition to using social media networks, UPH also visits to schools, churches, community leaders in all regions of Indonesia includes several countries outside Indonesia. During these visits, UPH not only informs about the availability of the program but also serves as a speaker to share knowledge and experience in workshop activities, as requested by schools with all students and participants. To reach a wider range of educational assistance students throughout Indonesia, UPH also collaborates with local governments for the new student recruitment process.



BOTTOM FINANCIAL QUINTILE STUDENT SUCCESS
All UPH students (100%) are targeted to graduate before their study period ends. In the accreditation assessment, there is an indicator of the student’s on-time graduation rate which is one of the assessments.
For low-income students who are sponsored by the UPH Foundation, they are required to complete their studies on time, and this is written in the agreement letter between the UPH Foundation and the students and parents.

LOW-INCOME STUDENT SUPPORT

The educational assistance is provided to students of the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Nursing that consist of educational development fees and academic learning fees. These fees are given to all eligible students throughout their studies at UPH. During their studies at UPH, the students also receive supporting fees such as re-registration fees, final project defence fees, accommodation fees (dormitory), student uniforms, meals, internet connection facilities, library, and transportation from their hometowns at the beginning of their come to UPH. In addition to students from the Faculty of Education and Nursing, the assistance program is also provided to students from other faculties in the form of phased reductions in educational fees (instalment system).

BOTTOM FINANCIAL QUINTILE STUDENT SUPPORT
To ensure that students successfully complete their studies, UPH has an academic mentoring program. Each student has one academic supervisor who helps them develop an optimal study plan, monitors and evaluates study results and learning outcomes. Through this program, each student’s study results are monitored so that students can successfully complete their studies.
All academic supervisors are appointed by the Dean with a decree from the Dean of each faculty at UPH. Academic supervisors are responsible for students from the time the student commits UPH until the student graduates from UPH.
This academic mentoring is regulated by the Rector’s Regulation PR Nomor 004 Tahun 2020 concerning the Academic Regulations of Universitas Pelita Harapan.
LOW OR LOWER-MIDDLE INCOME COUNTRIES STUDENT SUPPORT

UPH also provides educational assistance to international students from various countries. Educational assistance is given to international students who pass the selection for the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Nursing and consists of educational development fees and academic learning fees. These fees are given to all eligible students throughout their studies at UPH. During their studies at UPH, all students also receive supporting fees such as re-registration fees, final project defence fees, accommodation fees (dormitory), student uniforms, food and beverages, internet connection facilities, and library book borrowing. Students also receive assistance with student visa fees and medical insurance during their studies at UPH.

COMMUNITY ANTI-POVERTY PROGRAMMES
LOCAL START-UP ASSISTANCE
In addition to providing educational assistance to students, UPH is also involved in community development. This participation is through the involvement of faculty members and students in community service conducted in the areas around UPH and another city in Indonesia. Community service activities include providing education in places of worship like church, schools from elementary to high school, learning support, tutoring, business store, community associations, etc. UPH supports these activities by providing financial assistance and academic support to promote community.
For the existing students, UPH fosters an environment where students can transform their business ideas into tangible ventures that impact too to the community. Established in 2019, Sparklab has incubated six tenants across various industries. These tenants receive mentoring, participate in business idea competitions, and have access to funding from both investors and government sources, such as the Student Entrepreneurship Development Program (P2MW).
UPH has consistently participated in P2MW for three years, successfully securing government funding for student businesses. P2MW supports students at all stages of business development. In 2023, Lawana Batik Indonesia, a Sparklab Incubation tenant, secured P2MW funding and received mentorship. Lawana’s success extended to KMI Expo 2023, a follow-up event for P2MW participants in the creative industry. This expo serves as a platform for student entrepreneurs nationwide to showcase their products, network, and compete. Lawana Batik Indonesia represented UPH at KMI Expo 2023 in Singaraja, Bali, and achieved third place.

LOCAL START-UP FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
In addition to providing assistance in the form of education and programs, UPH also provides financial assistance to local start-ups. The financial assistance provided is not in the form of money to ensure the running of local start-up but by providing materials, machines, and even designs that have monetary value that can be used according to their business plans.
These programs are carried out through community service activities by faculty members and students in the local area and lower-middle-class villages. One of them is the community service activities for local start-up carried out by the UPH Faculty of Design in designing logos or packaging for several MSMEs such as Konnuku Fashion MSME Perancangan Ulang Identitas Visual dan Desain Kemasan UMKM Fesyen KonnuKu | Hardjono | Titik Imaji (ubm.ac.id) and UMKM Smooth Moves (PDF) Desain Ulang Stiker Kemasan Standing Paper Pouch untuk Produk Granola dari Smooth Moves (researchgate.net).
PROGRAMMES FOR SERVICES ACCESS
In community service activities, UPH organized training or programs to improve access to basic services.
In December 2022 – April 2023, the Faculty of Tourism provided training to improve access to cleanliness/hygiene and sanitation for the Huta Siallagan tourist village in Samosir, Sumatra, especially for culinary local businesses. In mid-2023, the Faculty of Medicine in collaboration with TMD Lippo Karawaci also held community service by providing training/programs for household assistants, security, and cleaning personnel about safe food selection related to improving nutrition as a basic need.
POLICY ADDRESSING POVERTY

UPH participates in alleviating poverty in Indonesia through involvement in policy making, one of which is at the regional level, UPH through the Faculty of Design, Faculty of Economics and Business, and Faculty of Psychology creates policies for the Prevention of Slum Growth and Development both in the physical aspect of the environment and the aspect of community empowerment consisting of community value development and human capacity development.
In human capacity development, it focuses on:
- Building Community Psychology to improve socio-cultural conditions, and
- Developing Community Economics to improve economic conditions
This policy is expected to end poverty in all dimensions because it is not only the physical environment but also from the people. to end poverty in all its dimensions.
