TANGERANG, 2023 – Universitas Pelita Harapan provided a platform for a direct exchange on the war in Ukraine, featuring the Ukrainian Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Dr. Vasyl Hamianin, and a lecturer from Universitas Pelita Harapan specializing on Sino-Russian studies, Mr. Adri Arlan. The discussion, held on September 27, 2023, aimed to foster dialogue between opposing perspectives on the conflict one year after its inception.
The event, titled “DipTalk: The Russian Invasion of Ukraine: One Year On, A View from Indonesia,” was organized by the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia Chapter UPH, an organizational branch of the Indonesian foreign policy think tank. It brought together key figures to facilitate a deeper understanding of the conflict’s complexities from an Indonesian viewpoint.
The forum’s central point was the candid series of exchanges between Ambassador Hamianin, who presented the Ukrainian position, and Mr. Arlan, a graduate student from the People’s Friendship University of Russia. Their discussion provided attendees with distinct viewpoints regarding the origins and ongoing nature of the war, creating a space for frank conversation on a sensitive geopolitical issue.
Moderated by Prof. Aleksius Jemadu, a Professor of International Relations at the university, the conversation allowed for a structured and respectful debate. The format was designed to ensure that both speakers could present their arguments and respond to questions within an academic environment.
By hosting the hybrid event both on its campus and online, Universitas Pelita Harapan facilitated an opportunity for students, academics, and the public to engage with the multifaceted crisis. The session underscored the value of open discussion in navigating complex international challenges, bringing together stakeholders with differing views for a constructive conversation.
