UPH’s Smoke-Free Policy: Fostering a Healthy, Respectful,
and Clean Campus Environment

TANGERANG, 2023 – Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) maintains a firm and comprehensive commitment to a smoke-free policy, ensuring that its entire campus, its buildings, grounds, and affiliated facilities, remains a healthy and comfortable space for students, staff, and visitors. The policy is embedded under Article 13 of the Student Code of Ethics, which requires all students to be prohibited from smoking in campus areas as part of their ethical obligations. The policy is also socialized in each faculty’s student handbook, as well as the UPH Fest 2023/2024 Student Handbook (page 12) – socialized to students in the beginning of their entry year. Moreover, in the Rector Regulation 010 in 2021, Article 2.11, in which regulates how the campus needs to be environment-friendly, and smoke-free – both from cigarettes and other air pollutions.
UPH’s approach goes beyond mere regulation: it is part of a broader culture of wellness and prevention. Since the “Stay Away: No S.A.D. Be SMART” campaign, the university has been actively promoting “Non-Smoking Campus” slogans displayed in strategic locations across campus, running awareness and education programs about the dangers of smoking, alongside consistent enforcement and penalties for violations. UPH underscores this commitment with additional formal regulations: all students, staff, and faculty are prohibited from smoking or consuming narcotics anywhere on campus, including teaching hospitals, cafeterias, university vehicles, and all university-owned grounds. Violations of this policy may lead to serious disciplinary action, including possible dismissal.
The smoke-free policy is not just about restriction; it reflects UPH’s holistic vision of well-being. By providing an environment free from smoke exposure, UPH helps protect non-smokers from passive smoking risks, supports healthier lifestyles among its community, and reinforces an institutional culture of responsibility. For students, this policy contributes to their academic and personal development in an environment that respects health, dignity, and mutual respect.
