Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) extends educational opportunities beyond campus through both programmed outreach initiatives and ad hoc community training. Through the Service Learning Community (SLC) and faculty-led activities, UPH students and lecturers share knowledge, deliver educational sessions, and equip teachers and community mentors with practical skills to support learning and personal development.

Programmed Outreach: Mari Membaca 9

UPH continued its annual Mari Membaca literacy programme through its ninth edition, Mari Membaca 9, organised by the Student Affairs Department’s Service Learning Community (SLC). Held on 11 and 17 April 2025 at SDN 5 Tigaraksa, Tangerang Regency, the programme engaged 617 elementary school students, 24 teachers, and 36 UPH students, supported by 38 committee members. Under the theme “Melangkah dengan Cerita, Menuju Masa Depan Ceria,” the initiative aimed to strengthen reading interest, literacy awareness, and positive learning habits among elementary school students.

The programme featured interactive reading sessions, seminars for teachers and students, creative activities such as collage-making and bookmark decoration, and improvements to the school library. UPH students also helped transform an unused room into a more welcoming library, supported by book donations from several publishers and a QR code linking students to the BukuAku digital library platform. By combining educational activities with improvements to the school’s learning environment, Mari Membaca 9 supports literacy development and more engaging learning opportunities beyond the university campus. As an annual initiative, it demonstrates UPH’s sustained commitment to community-based educational outreach.

Ad Hoc Outreach: Teacher and Youth-Mentor Training

Adolescent Mentoring Training for Teachers in Nekmese Village

UPH’s Faculty of Psychology conducted training for teachers in Nekmese Village to strengthen their understanding of adolescent development and equip them with practical strategies for supporting young people’s academic, social, and emotional growth. The activity extends university expertise to local educators, allowing and assisting them to develop more informed and supportive approaches to mentoring teens and youth.

Adolescent Mentoring Training for Staff and Mentors at LKSA Widya Asih

UPH’s Faculty of Psychology also delivered training for staff and mentors at LKSA Widya Asih in Melaya and Blimbingsari. The programme focused on helping participants understand, guide, and support adolescents as they navigate psychosocial challenges. Through this faculty-led outreach, UPH shares relevant knowledge and practical mentoring skills with individuals working directly with young people in community care settings.

Through its annual literacy programme and targeted community training, UPH demonstrates a continuing commitment to educational outreach beyond campus. These initiatives support school-based literacy, strengthen teachers’ and mentors’ capabilities, and extend educational resources and practical knowledge to local communities, contributing to SDG 4: Quality Education.
